Aquaculture Organic Labeling
Timeline
Summary
Declaration of acknowledgement by all parties that the Canada Organic label can be applied to conforming aquaculture products. The 'Canada Organic' label falls under federal control. Thus, this reconciliation agreement was not wholly necessary (getting PTs to sign on did not need to happen to effect the change described in the reconciliation agreement). With that said, Canada's governments opted to employ the RCT mechanism to produce and release an alignment document declaring consensus around the change.
Description
Introduced as part of the 2018 RCT Work Plan. Date of the reconciliation agreement is unclear, but the RCT 2019-2020 Work Plan noted its signing as having been complete. That same work plan also noted that the coming into force of the federal Safe Food for Canadians Act on 15 Jan 2019 removed the restrictions in place prohibiting producers to market aquaculture products as organic.
